scrabble game Here are easy activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the Second Grade language arts standards.

For several activities, we have listed similar online activities that your child can explore themselves or that you and your child can do together.

Use lists and notes to communicate with your child
Encourage your child to read recipes when helping in the kitchen
Encourage your child to say rhymes or chants when playing games such as jump rope or hopscotch
Have your child write or orally give directions to a younger sibling
Have your child alphabetize the books on his/her bookshelf by author
Play a game where you make a statement that is a fact or an opinion and ask your child which it is

Skill:	Talk to your child about the characters in a story read. Have your child get a mental image of a character from the story and then write a short description of the character.
Activities:	Character Scrapbook Use this activity to draw a character from your favorite book or as part of your next book report. Elements of a Story-Characters Can you find the characters from Cinderella? Characters Build a character from a story or create your own. Be sure to write a description too!
Skill:	Have your child practice reading books orally to improve voice expression and phrasing when reading aloud

Skill:	Read fables and tall-tales. Discuss elements of the stories that make each a fable or a tall-tale
Activities:	Aesop’s Fables Read many of the Aesop’s fables here! Which one is your favorite? Tall Tales These tall tales are from all over the United States.
Skill:	Have your child read and follow directions to put something together
Activities:	Origami for Kids Follow the directions, fold the paper, and make fun origami designs. Kid’s Recipes Try these recipes that you and an adult can make (and eat) together! Bon Appétit Follow the riddles to help make a witch’s brew.
Skill:	Find books to listen to and read online
Activities:	Inkless Tales-Stories You can read and listen to several stories here. Check out the poetry page too!
